The Great Mill at Alderwash ground grain for two hundred years before the river put a mind in it. Now the wheel turns when it pleases, the stones grind what they are given, and the whole timber frame leans toward trouble like a dog toward a whistle. Millers leave it a sack of grain a week. It has never asked for more, which worries them worse.
